FAQ's
What is an American Miniature Horse?
American Miniature Horses are registered with either or both the American Miniature Horse Registry (AMHR) or the American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA). Both registries measure horses at the last mane hair, not at the withers as in large horse breeds.
AMHR has two height divisions, A division is for Minis 34" and under, and a B division that is over 34" to 38".
AMHA has only one division which is 34" and under.
What can you do with them?
Miniature Horses can be kept as pets, shown in a variety of classes (halter, driving, jumping, liberty, etc.) at both club and open shows, perform in CDE competition, and make great therapy horses for hospital & nursing home visits.
What do you feed them?
Minis eat
What colors do they come in?
Almost all the colors of the rainbow! There are actual a myriad of colors that minis come in and not all are correctly classified or recognized by the major registries. Suffice it to say the base colors of black, red and bay can be diluted to smoky black, palomino and buckskin or with a double dilute gene to smoky creme, cremello and perlino. Add on to the 'solid' colors all the modifiers to coat color - pinto (tobiano, splash, overo, sabino), appaloosa (blanket, snow flake, snow cap, varnish, leopard), dun, grulla, and silver. Once that is done you can add it the other 'white' markings on face and legs. It really takes a whole genetic book to adequately describe and catagories horse colors!
How much do they cost?
Depending on the part of the country (or world) that you're in and depending on quality, registration paperwork, etc. you can get a mini from a few hundred dollars to well over hundred thousand. But those are at opposite ends of the average price. Most minis sell from $1,000-10,000 with the majority in the $1,500-4,500 range. Doing your homework, shopping around and really setting a goal for your mini (is this a pet, a future show horse or ?), can help you decide what you're comfortable with as far as purchasing a miniature horse goes.
